MGH Learning Laboratory at Treadwell Library

If you've visited the library recently, you may have noticed that the second floor is completely clear of books; we've replaced the stacks with an open space for computer terminals, study carrels, group work tables and two study rooms with monitors for presentations (or just seeing Facebook really close up).

In addition to these study spaces, Treadwell's second floor is now also home to the MGH Learning Laboratory, "a collaborative institutional effort designed to unify simulation-based training and research across an MGH community of practice."  The Learning Lab is an exciting new resource at MGH, and Treadwell is proud to be part of this effort.  Last night, Treadwell Library and Learning Lab hosted the lab's official ribbon cutting!

Beth Schneider, our director, and Jim Gordon, the Learning Lab's program lead, both spoke about the partnership between Treadwell and the Learning Lab; they explained that the lab's location in the library is not a coincidence, and that it will - and already has - fostered a closer relationship between the librarians here at Treadwell and the simulated medicine community at MGH.  MGH President Peter Slavin also spoke about this partnership and the role it will play in furthering a culture of education at the hospital.

Below are a few of our own photos from last night's event; we at Treadwell would like to thank everyone who attended, and express again our enthusiasm to be working with and alongside the Learning Lab team!

Happy 200th Birthday, MGH!

Today, Massachusetts General Hospital celebrates its 200th anniversary with a number of on-campus events.

Martha Stone, a Treadwell librarian with an avid interest in MGH history, will be staffing today's preview of the Paul S. Russell, MD, Museum of Medical History and Innovation, which will open in December 2011. Models, plans for the museum and artifacts from the hospital’s historic collections - including a replica of the ether inhaler, surgical kits, and a 19th century quack medicine device! - will be on display in the White Corridor.

Treadwell's Associate Director, Carolyn Paul, MSLS, AHIP, submitted the winning idea for the theme of the Medical Library Association's 2011 National Medical Librarians Month!

Carolyn's aim was to emphasize that medical librarians are the best resource in a search for health information. Her theme will be featured on the 2011 National Medical Librarians Month poster and the May issue of MLA News!

Changes at Treadwell Library in 2010

Here is a brief update for our virtual library users who have not seen the changes happening at Treadwell.

•All of our bound journals are now on the 3d floor
•The 2d floor journal stacks have been removed to make room for a simulation center and individual and collaborative work spaces for library users

The renovated space will offer a rich and unique learning environment in one location.
•Hands-on and reflective learning opportunities
•Online and print knowledge resources
•The expertise of Treadwell librarians and faculty from departments across MGH

The construction will take place over the next few months and we will keep you updated. Follow this link for more information.
